Arsenal 2-1 Leeds United

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes scored the winner as Arsenal came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium. Leeds were the more threatening side in a goalless first half and took a deserved lead through James Justin 10 minutes after the break. But Arsenal responded when Riccardo Calafiori volleyed an equaliser, and Guimaraes completed the turnaround just seven minutes after being introduced from the bench. The hosts missed several late chances to add a third, but held on to deny a spirited Leeds a point.

The visitors started with confidence and, after Noah Okafor and Justin had efforts blocked in the same eighth-minute attack, goalkeeper David Raya was called into action to save from Jayden Bogle’s shot. Arsenal’s best opening of the first half arrived in the 21st minute when Noni Madueke’s cross found Kai Havertz, but his header was saved by James Trafford in the Leeds goal.

Leeds continued to cause problems, with Raya making saves from an Ethan Ampadu header and a Gabriel Gudmundsson strike before the interval. They carried that momentum into the second period and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Gudmundsson’s delivery was met by Justin, who scored with a right-foot finish.

Arsenal’s equaliser came from an unlikely source. A Madueke shot was blocked into the path of Ben White, whose cross was converted on the volley by defender Calafiori. The hosts then introduced Guimaraes, Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyoekeres from the bench, and the triple substitution soon paid dividends when Declan Rice teed up Guimaraes to score.

Leeds committed more players forward in search of an equaliser but it was Arsenal who created the better late chances in front of an attendance of 60,315. Martin Oedegaard was denied by a fine Trafford save after being set up by Rice, before the Leeds goalkeeper made an even better stop to keep out an attempt from Bukayo Saka in stoppage time.
